From a 9-5 Job to Owning a Business - the Journey of Sally Frances Coombes

From the Gold Coast of Australia, a young talented individual who was able to put away all her fears aside and stepped foot into creating her own business! Sally Frances Coombes is an extremely skilled designer who made her business so successful, starting it from scratch, that it allowed her to leave her 9-5 job!

She uses her designs to help coaches and other such professionals out there that are creating their own training courses and programs. She is assisting those who are trying to educate others with their knowledge.

Although the world has become very fast and everyone is busy with their work, we were still able to get to speak with and have answers to some very important questions from the kind designer!

How did you become a graphic artist?

I did not start as a graphic designer. I used to work as a full-time 9-5 employee in the media industry. I have always had a passion for graphics, and one day, I decided to take the leap to start my own business, and that was the best decision of my life. I love designing as it allows me to turn any words and content into a visual masterpiece with my imagination. These graphics are easily processed by our brains as well.

When I started doing this business, I straight-away went with Canva as it allowed me to design even without having very high graphic designing skills, unlike Adobe which requires you to have some hefty experience to begin working properly. With the help of Canva, I started creating different packages for my clients, which included branding, social media, and eBook packages.

Some people may prefer to work with their clients directly one-to-one, but I don't! So, creating and selling templates instead was a win-win situation for me. And for this reason, I create designs that are extremely versatile and flexible so that the users can apply their own themes and make the design more specific to their brand. This is because when creating Canva templates and packages, I think of them as a general framework, which can be worked upon to customize, and not as some themes and finalized styles.

What inspires your art?

My main source of inspiration comes from Instagram, where I see other people's work, take ideas from there, and put the spin of my imagination over it! It's mainly about getting motivation from others' designs and not taking it as a limitation to my creativity. Other than this, I get inspired by everything around me as well. From the ocean to the shops I walk by, beautiful houses, and strange sign boards, everything helps me generate numerous different designs for my work.

What is your daily process like?

If I summarize my daily routine in the simplest way possible, it would be to get up, work out, work on my designs, go for a walk, and do some more business work in the afternoon and evening. But I try to keep only mundane tasks for the later part of the day. That's because my brain is most functional in the morning, usually before 11 am, and so I try to do the creative and focus-requiring work early.

Who buys your art from Social Media Calendar?

Coaches and service businesses mainly buy my Canva templates and designs. These include mentors, professionals, niche experts, and people who are creating online courses and training programs.

Do you have any other jobs besides?

No, this is my full-time job. How lucky am I to have it!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself doing the same thing, that is, using Canva to create more amazing designs and templates, but with my business expanded to include more tasks, such as customer service and community management.

What do you want to say to your fans?

I love to see my templates being used out there. I love how they are “out in the wild” and how the members are applying their own custom colors, fonts, and niche topics to my templates to create customized versions of their own!

What themes do you like to focus on in your art?

As for the themes used in my designs, I would say pastel, bright, and fun!
