Art is one of the most powerful forms of expression, and Russell and Rich from London knew that very well when they started their Canva templates design business, Emerald Eyes Design. Named after the emerald eyes of one of their three cats, the business carries tons of personality and originality, and the templates are an ode to everything they love –countryside, animals, music, and gardening!
With their degrees in music and design, the couple is well-equipped to create trendy social media templates, and have strengthened their bond through the business.
A few days back, we got in touch with them, and Russell answered a few of our questions:
How did you two become a graphic artists?
We both had an interest in designing and social media, and we wanted to do something together.
Since both of us were already designing for our existing businesses, we realized that we could also do it to help other people’s ventures. So that’s how the idea of Emeralds Eyes Design emerged. It was something we could both enjoy and do as a team.
Tell us your story. Why do you love designing?
It's hard to say why we love it. It's just that we both had art-oriented personalities, which is why we chose Designing and Music at university, and now seemed like the perfect time to create a business out of our passion.
The fact that we could both collaborate and give equally to the project was also a huge plus.
What inspires your art?
We believe in individuality and originality. So, we focus on creating modern yet unconventional templates, for example, we recently finished an LGBTQ pride niche bundle. You can say that our lives and experiences define our work, and we like to add a bit of our own self wherever we can.
What is your daily process like?
We generally spend some time during the day designing, but we have to work around our existing day jobs to do that. So, most of our work gets done during the evenings when we are completely focused on the Emerald Eyes Design.
Who buys your art from Social Media Calendar?
We have social media templates covering a range of niches, from travel to business, beauty, house plants, and designs with different colors and themes. Our clients are also as diverse as our products.
Although we are based in the UK, we design for the world and that’s where our customers are from!
Can you tell a bit more about your style?
Although I have designed neutral bundles, I love brightly colored templates so I tend to add a splash of color in my designs whenever possible. I also like to include niches that I’m interested in and knowledgeable about in my designs.
I think my style is mostly dominated by what phase of life I am in, and the things I'm passionate about during that time. Currently, we have templates for Instagram feeds and stories, with themes ranging from house plants, the corporate world, travel, ultra-modern, and beauty. These templates include guides, this & that, new product introductions and motivational quotes, etc.
Do you have any other jobs besides?
Yes, I run an online store selling clothes and accessories, and my partner has a vegan business. Our existing businesses actually paved the way for our graphics design one. We were already handling their social media graphics ourselves, so we decided to lend our expertise to others like us.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I feel that designing is a better fit for me than selling physical products. I also have health issues that make it hard to handle my current business. So, I’d like to completely phase out my clothes business with full-time graphics designing.
We want to keep helping startups and small businesses in building a cohesive and aesthetic-looking Instagram feed. And hopefully, soon become a force to be reckoned with in the graphics design market.
